Welcome to Spare Krab!
Outdoor Learning and Adventure Therapy Specialist
Adventure Therapy provider,
practitioner training, supervision, and support
Spare Krab is about the blending of adventure, experiential learning, helpful conversations, and nature-based therapy. A quick literature search will point to evidence that time in nature can be therapeutic, that talking therapy works, that learning in an applied, contextual, experiential way is effective. The blend, done well, is powerful.
Adventure Therapy is a specialised profession. There are not many multi-activity practitioners as the barriers to entry are high due to the need for multiple accreditations, training, skills, knowledge, and experience in both therapy and adventure leadership.
If you understand what a spare krab is in terms of emergency kit, and want to become a more effective skilled helper, then you are possibly at the best place for your ongoing training and supervision. Equally, if you don’t know what a spare krab is and want a better idea of what working with adventure is about, then there’s something for you too.
I hope you find something useful in the following pages, whether you’re looking for therapeutic adventure for yourself, or training, supervision, and continuing professional development. My training courses are always for very small groups: 1 to 1 is not unusual as Adventure Therapy is a niche provision. I never drop a course because of low numbers, so training, like my therapeutic work, is bespoke and one can’t get more client focused than that.
It is important to me that the fit between what you are looking for and what I can provide is as close as possible, so with that in mind there is no booking form with this website. Instead, I invite you to get in touch and we can talk about what you are looking for and whether I’m the right person to help.
Go well, be kind, stay safe.

Stephan – Your Specialist
I started my formal career in outdoor-learning and Adventure Therapy in 1988 when I was rapidly immersed in experiential education while working as a post-doctoral ‘Scientist-in-Residence’. I went on to formally train as an adventure sports leader, instructor, and coach, science teacher and counsellor while working with young people in crisis. I have long been interested in the development of Adventure Therapy and completed my MBA researching how AT practitioners construct their own sense of professionalism. I have enjoyed being an international speaker on Adventure Therapy in the USA, Europe, and Australia, and helping pioneer the use of Solution Focused practice and leadership models in Adventure Therapy. My practice model helps to optimise the therapeutic qualities of adventure and wilderness experiences, and ensures I work within defined parameters to professional standards of good practice, always with my clients’ best interests as a priority.
I am DBS checked, and regularly supervised, mostly by Dr Elspeth Schwenk, a BACP Snr. Accredited Counsellor, Supervisor and Fellow, experienced in taking talking therapy outside.
